A hotel where Bohemia’s postcards were printed
Three buildings on a cliff above the meanders of the Metuje housed one of Bohemia’s most significant printing houses for over a century. Today they hold a four-star wellness hotel — with a name of literary origin.
From printing house to hotel
1851
Theodor Böhm founds the business in Nové Město nad Metují that grows into the Graphic Institute — a printer of official forms. Böhm was elected the town’s mayor three times.
late 1800s
The printing house becomes the near-monopoly producer of topographic postcards — views from all over Bohemia are printed right here, on the cliff above the Metuje.
1905
His son Jindřich Böhm takes over. After Jindřich’s death in 1914 the firm is run by his widow Jiřina — until December 1945.
1936–1938
The writer Jaromír John lives in the building. In 1938 he writes his children’s book Paradise Island here.
today
The former printing works is a hotel complex of three buildings with an enclosed courtyard, a garden and parking. The three most luxurious rooms are in the former factory building.
Why “Paradise Garden”
The hotel stands on a cliff above a garden long known as “paradise garden” — below it, the Metuje winds in meanders around the historic centre. That view charmed Jaromír John, who lived here in the 1930s and wrote Paradise Island.
The hotel’s name ties the place to its literary trace. You can see the paradise garden from the restaurant terrace and from the valley-facing rooms.
The architecture and the little window
The hotel’s architecture and design are the work of architect Helena Dařbujánová. During the conversion she discovered a small window that became the central motif of the visual identity — you’ll find it in the hotel’s logo.
Local tradition has it that Dušan Jurkovič — the architect of the town’s famous château garden — had a hand in a veranda on the grounds. One of the Exclusive theme rooms is named after him; others honour the poet Karel Hynek Mácha and the Bartoň family.
The hotel today
Twenty-four rooms in five categories, a wellness centre with a counter-current pool, a restaurant with a terrace cantilevered over the valley, and a gym open to the public. The town square is a five-minute walk; parking is in the hotel courtyard.
